Well, it never fails. Whenever I go out of town, upon my return I am just SLAMMED with more things to do than a human can do! Unfortunately, that mean’s I’m a whole week LATE in posting this article.
I arrived back from my trip to Las Vegas at about 4:30 a.m. last Monday. That’s exactly one week ago. I didn’t leave Las Vegas until about 9:30 pm because I had the pleasure of having dinner with one of our first Independent Associate Directors, Joe Yasul and his wife Rose, on Sunday night before leaving town. It was a great meeting and very productive (not to mention the food was wonderful too!). Unfortunately, that meant I would need to drive all night. The drive went well and without incident, and I didn’t get too tired (thanks to the free 5-Hour Energy drinks being passed out like candy at CES) but it did put me back in town a little later than I had originally expected.
I needed to recover from traveling all day on Monday so not much was accomplished. On Tuesday, I played catch-up with our top sales people and discovered that one more tool was needed immediately in our growing arsenal of sales materials. I spent the rest of that day and the rest of the week creating a new “Overview and Registration Booklet”. This booklet is the first complete tool that can be used by Associates to explain our system, our current pre-launch benefits, and do a sign-up whether or not the Associate and the prospect are close to a computer and the Internet. I’ll be introducing this booklet in tomorrow’s article, and I’m sure you’ll hear a lot more about it in the coming weeks.
But for now, I want to talk about CES! Sorry for the length of this article. I want to introduce you to my TOP 10 PICKS AT CES for this year. I have learned that each and every year that I attend this remarkable trade show, I find at least one product or service that, all by itself, made the trip worthwhile, and literally pays for the travel and attendance expense. This year was no different. My NUMBER ONE pick for this year more than pays the travel expenses for both Eric and I to CES for this year! As you can see, I’m embedding some of the photos from the show below. However, to see all the pictures, you can just go to the new Photo Album for CES 2010 that I just uploaded. Just click on a thumbnail to get a description of each picture.
CONTEST AND GIVE-AWAY!
Before getting started, I want to show you something and ask a question. We all know that trade shows always provide plenty of “SWAG” (Show Wares and Gifts). You know. These are the freebies - pens, cups, gadgets and other things with the company name printed all over it - for the attendees to take home. HERE is a really unusual SWAG piece I picked up. I got it at the D-Link booth. But, WHAT IS IT? I’ll give you a couple of hints. It is a common product. Used by billions of people world-wide. And used daily (but not necessarily EVERY day), by both men and women. I’m running a little contest here. Anyone and everyone who can GUESS what this is by the end of this month (that is anyone to whom I have not already given the answer…), will get FIVE PORTS as a bonus! Of course, this only applies to those who have registered for the Port Incentive Program, so if you haven’t done so, be sure you register right away so you can win this bonus! Just post your answer as a comment to this article and I’ll let you know by email whether you won or not. I’ll post the answer and the winners on my February 1 article.
And with that, let’s get on to my TOP TEN picks. My NUMBER ONE FAVORITE for 2010 is … (drum roll)… Dyyno EZ Broadcaster. Man. I found this on the last day of the show so I’m glad I didn’t leave early. As many of you know, we often do webinars for sales and training purposes. We have used GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, Glance, Yugma and others during the past year to coordinate these meetings. It appears that Dyyno has really put together a fantastic program!
TECHNO-PICK #1
DYYNO EZ BROADCASTER
This is my “hands down” favorite pick for this year! As you know, we deliver many online meetings to prospects for sales presentations and also are using this medium for training more and more. EZ Broadcaster gives us many advantages that we cannot get with GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, Glance, Yugma or the other services we used during the past year. Clearly, we had settled on using just one service before, at least not until NOW. I have a strong feeling that this year, you’re going to see a lot of activity from our Dyyno EZ Broadcaster account!
Here is a picture of yours truly waving at the camera while I was still at CES, just after I set up my account. They, like most Exhibitors, were demonstrating their product by letting people use it “live”. That’s right. Not only can we do live webinars of slide shows, but I can ALSO have live, streaming video showing at the same time! (As if anybody actually WANTS to see me or another presenter as we’re blabbing away…).
I was so impressed with their service that only 10 minutes after I saw their exhibit, I paid for the account and set it up. Essentially, this is a service that allows us to stream anything that shows on my desktop, live and in real time, to multiple PC’s … and when I say “multiple”, I mean up to a whopping 100,000 at one time! (Just so you know how significant this is, it’s only 100 times MORE than GoToWebinar !
Another great feature about this technology is the incredible ease of use. There was almost “no” learning curve. Can’t say that about ANY other service I have used. Dyyno made such a simple, intuitive interface that (to borrow from GEICO’s famous commercials) … “even a CAVEMAN can do it.” (wink!) No kidding. Although the user STILL has to download a tiny program to make the service work, the applet is far easier, and the instructions much more user friendly than the current industry leader for online meetings (GoToMeeting). I had a couple of non-tech-savvy people test an online broadcast with me, and nobody had questions about “how” to get it running on their own system! Unbelievable! That one issue has hampered us with every other service (except those that are strictly browser-based…but those have “other issues” too).
And the best part is the price. This is only $39.95 for the year. GoToWebinar is $99.95 PER MONTH! That means, we’re saving $1,159.45 just in the first year alone! In fact, it gets even better! Dyyno ALSO lets us set up VOD (Video On Demand) in our account. This means, we can move our Introduction, Client and User videos from the current host, over to EZ Broadcaster and save ANOTHER $1,000 A YEAR OR SO! EZ Broadcaster seems to have the capability of delivering far more service for far less money than any other company. Period. I think they have a major “hit” on their hands with this company. I send my congratulations and THANK YOU to Nisha, Vamshi, Parth and the rest of the team at Dyyno for building such robust and easy-to-use application. We’ll be telling a lot of people about this service! You can go to our EZ Broadcaster page by entering this address in your browser: www.dyyno.com/globaltmail . We’ll have some permanent content in there soon. Until then, you’ll only see something when we announce a scheduled broadcast.
TECHNO-PICK #2
XAMBOX
Actually, the Xambox was my #1 pick from LAST year’s CES, and it remains at the top of my pick-list this year. I was REALLY glad they came back. In fact, they had added a smaller unit to their product line. I don’t want it because it’s just not fast enough for the volume I need to process, but it’s good for smaller users. The Xambox would have taken the #1 spot if I had been able to BUY it at the show. This year, it’s still a very close #2, because this device solves one of my biggest business headaches of all time: FILING. Now…….I suppose I’m the only one reading this article that actually has a PROBLEM with getting all my documents in order, filed, and available at my fingertips at any moment I want them. Fine. YOU may not have a problem with it but “I” do. It seems that, even as a tiny company-still-in-its-development-stage, we have an enormous amount of paper to keep track of everyday. I just can’t do it all. But the Xambox CAN. Here you can see me and Eric at their Exhibit with the Xambox pictured behind us. This is definitely on my GOTTA-HAVE-IT-RIGHT-NOW-BEFORE-IT’S-TOO-LATE list. Yeah. That’s what I said last year. But this year I really, really mean it! I do. Why is this such a cool gizmo? Check this out: To file ANY paper document, here’s what you do:
- Drop the paper in the hopper at the top (you see the paper in the photo, on top, ready to feed, just like a copier).
- It automatically and QUICKLY (10 PPM) scans through and drops into the box below (you can see the box where a tray is normally located). Both sides are scanned, any size document business card size to legal size, and everything is “read” into a searchable database.

TECHNO-PICK #3
GLOBALTELMEDIA
How can I “NOT” like a company whose name is so similar to ours, bearing our SAME initials (“GTM”), dealing in our SAME industry (web-to-cell-phone communications), and yet they are NOT necessarily a competitor, but may well become one of our primary vendor/partners? After all, their motto could well have been OUR motto: “Web2Wireless-N Back”. Gee. Wish “I” had thought of that one! OK … I’ll just have to come up with something even better. ;-)
This is a company you’ll never hear about again from “ME”. In fact, I debated heavily whether to introduce them or not. Just suffice it to say that, this is a company who can bring a sizeable amount of technical capability to us in a partner relationship which works completely in the background. They can supply us with most if not all of the text-messaging services we are beginning to develop for ourselves, without us having to finish our own development (for now), but labeled with our own name (“GlobalTmail” instead of “Alerti” or “GlobalTelMedia”). AND, they do it in a way that is completely invisible and seamless to our users! It will just appear as a normal part of our own service. If you see us rolling out all or most of the text-messaging services within the next 2 or 3 months instead of 6 months or more from now, you’ll know that in all likelihood, it is the result of a partnership between GTM (us) and GTM (them)! I can’t say we’ll definitely do business with them because I have not yet entered into negotiations, but that’s coming. VERY SOON!
TECHNO-PICK #4
FoxIt PDF Solution
It wasn’t just the cool bag they handed out. Or the fact that it was stuffed with a really GOOD T-shirt, and a bunch of other SWAG. It wasn’t the dazzling personnel, the booth babe or their flashy graphics. It certainly was NOT the PDF readers they were trying to highlight. What I REALLY like here is that they seem to be a truly viable competitor for the ubiquitous Adobe Acrobat product! I use Adobe Acrobat Professional often to create nice PDF’s. But I don’t have the most current version. Mine is 2.5 years old…ancient in the PC world. PDF’s are the best way to distribute documents. However, Adobe is expensive. This is a much less expensive solution, and seems to do everything, and more, that Adobe’s product does. Another thing I really like: This program takes up about 22 meg of disk space, loads SUPER-fast, and executes even faster. Adobe’s product is ONE HUNDRED TIMES THAT SIZE!!! Over 2 gig. And, it is S – L – O – W … VERY cumbersome to use. I feel a change coming on very soon. Like maybe TOMORROW.
TECHNO-PICK #5
DATAJACK
I currently use Verizon Wireless for all my cell phone and wireless technology. The upside is that their coverage is BY FAR the best in the USA. Downside? EXPENSIVE. Lucky for me, they just switched their $99.95 unlimited wireless fee to $69.95. But don’t be fooled. That does NOT include text messaging or data services…ala carte. Unfortunately, I also bought their “air card.” It works OK. And I am definitely able to use my laptop pretty much anywhere. But it sets my back 60 bucks a month whether I use it or not on a 2-year contract. This is just a little card that looks a lot like a USB drive (see www.datajack.com). Plug it in and voila ! You’re on the Internet wirelessly pretty much anywhere. But now, I see DATAJACK here at CES! It does the same thing … but …
- No Fees
- No Contracts
- No Credit Check
- No Deposit
- No Early Termination Fees
- No Activation Fee
Now THAT’S more like it. I am very, VERY tempted to dump my Verizon air card in favor of THIS little puppy. The only question is coverage. I’m studying that right now. If the coverage is even half-decent (i have been told it’s the same as T-Mobile), then I’m going to have to get it. Soon.
TECHNO-PICK #6
DOCUPEN TREME: Bluetooth Series
Now THIS is a handy gadget. Here’s a picture of it from their Exhibit. This scanner has countless uses, especially for students and business guys like me. It’s about the size of a very large pen so you can take it anywhere. Just whip this thing out and just wand-it down the printed page. The image is stored neatly on a removable SD card (up to 32 gig), and with Docupen, is automatically transferred via Bluetooth to your PC! Neato! It’s the fastest pen-sized scanner on the market with 64 MB Fast SDRAM, Onboard Memory, Bluetooth Connectivity, OLED Screen Display and New Lithium-Polymer Battery for long operation & standby life.
Cool! I want one. Maybe I should have taken them up on their CES special offer. They were selling a few of them for about 1/2 price. But I thought to myself: If I start buying everything offered to me here, I am going home BROKE!
TECHNO-PICK #7
WOOT!
If you don’t already know this company you MUST check them out. They are one of my all-time favorite companies. They are a close-out distributor of all gadget-oriented high-tech items. And sometimes no-tech items, too! If nothing else, you should visit www.woot.com each and every night after 11 pm for their daily deal. It’s worth the entertainment value alone just to read their product descriptions. I swear – these people make me laugh at EVERYTHING they write about! You have to see it to believe it, so go there someday and just check it out. I couldn’t resist getting a picture of my son, Eric in front of their Exhibit. He is one of their regular customers.
TECHNO-PICK #8
5 BARZ.COM and SmoothTalker
I’m not sure which of these I like the best, but 5Barz did seem more seemless and simple to install and use. Essentially, this is just a great way to boost any cell phone or wireless data signal (like when using DataJack above) so you never have dropped calls. These competing companies seem to have a product that does pretty must the same thing. However, as I mentioned I think 5Barz is more simple to install and use. That is BIG in these days of installing and learning countless computer programs.
TECHNO-PICK #9
PICO PROJECTORS
I ran across a veritable plethora of mini projectors and something new called “PICO PROJECTORS. Here’s a photo of Eric testing out one of these great little devices. ‘Nuff said. This is REALLY cool, and has great potential for use by our sales people, especially when they do face-to-face presentations!
TECHNO-PICK #10
SAYGUS V-PHONE
You’re going to see this first on Verizon in a few months. This is a Salt Lake City company that is first to roll out a new technology capable of streaming 2-way video calls over the cell phone network. Man. This is straight out of science fiction from not-too-many-years-ago! It’s actually kind of exciting that this technology originated right in our own back yard!
I snapped this picture of Eric standing next to a large photo of this incredible phone so you can know what it’s all about. The picture pretty much says it all.
The camera lens is on the front of the phone instead of on the back. Of course, I know a LOT of people who just do NOT want to be seen when they are talking. Wonder how this is going to go over in the cell phone community? I think it’s pretty neat, but will the masses think so? Evidently, Verizon thinks so!
I’m going to wrap up today’s EXTRA-LONG article by just reminding you that I have several MORE pictures in the new CES 2010 Photo Album. And one more thing. My son Eric worked EXTRA hard on this trip so I want to thank him for all his “help.” I mean, SOMEBODY had to take advantage of all those photo-ops with the booth-babes, right? Here is Eric, hard at work, and letting me know that he MUST be invited as a member of next year’s GlobalTmail delegation to the International Consumer Electronics Show!
However, Adobe is expensive. This is a much less expensive solution, and seems to do everything, and more, that Adobe’s product does.

Great conference with good ideas! I hope that some will work. You know, the main problem isn't the idea of the perfect item to invent, but the idea how to get it used by a lot of people..tricky.
